Michael Hart, R.I.P.
Written on September 25, 2011 by Katherine W. Prawl
Who among us has not yet read an ebook? Yet, they have only been around for about forty years, ever since Michael Hart decided that digitizing all the available (out of copyright) books in the world should be done, and to make them freely available.
Who is Michael Hart, you say? You may not have heard of him, but you almost certainly have heard of Project Gutenberg, which he founded in 1971.
There is a story about this pioneer in The Guardian news site that describes the project and how Hart went about it. As someone who has built my career around electronic publishing, I wanted to take this opportunity to recognize the man who got the whole field started. Thank you, Mr. Hart, for all you did for booklovers around the world.
