OpenSim

I’ve been aware of this open-source virtual world server application for some time, at least in theory, but haven’t researched it yet. However, through an interesting string of events I just found a blog that discusses installing and using it. I’m going to add this to my link list, it’s so interesting as well as informative.
What is OpenSim? According to the project’s wiki, “The OpenSimulator Project is a BSD Licensed Open Source Application Platform which can be used for creating immersive 3D Virtual Interactive Environments such as a Virtual world. Out of the box, the OpenSim can be used to create a Second Life like environment, able to run in a standalone mode or connected to other OpenSim instances through built in grid technology. It can also easily be extended to produce more specialized 3D interactive applications.”
So there you go. Yet another metaverse application to explore in my copious spare time.
I won’t get around to this for awhile, but how I found the blog is interesting. Sunday evening I went over to Leandra’s place to check the teleporter there from the ISM Clubhouse, because she was giving a talk to the QSL group there the next morning. She had a gadget to show me, a prim skirt generator. Well, it looked pretty nifty, and it was free, so I took the creator’s profile from the object and went to his location listed in the picks. The same guy who made the prim skirt maker also writes that blog. So now you know.
